Here we are again at the start of a new year, filled with wishes and hopes for something better, more relaxed, less stressful. In order to help make your time at home more relaxing, ensure you have everything necessary to kick back in comfort and enjoy time with family and friends. The following ways to refresh your outdoor lounge in the new year will do just that. Take a few tips from designers who suggest focusing on cleaning, color, shade and focal points – all projects that can be accomplished in a single weekend.
Make a Clean Start
You may have made resolutions this year to eat healthier, exercise more or quit a bad habit. Why not afford your outdoor lounge the same focus? You might be amazed at just how much a deep clean of your patio surfaces and outdoor furnishings will refresh your outdoor lounge.
We recommend that you remove all items from the patio, then give it a good sweep and hosing down with plain water. If there are stains or gunk on concrete or pavers, use a mild detergent mixed with water and a stiff scrub brush to tackle them.
Before you return the patio furniture, make sure it gets a good washing, too. If you spray your patio cushions with water and/or a mild cleaning solution, make sure they dry thoroughly before putting them back in place. If there are any stubborn stains or mold, this may be the year to replace those cushions; Hauser’s Patio can help with that.
Color Your World
Every year, interior and outdoor designers are eager to work with the latest color collections. For a reminder of what colors are hot this year, read our blog post on 2022 color design trends here.
Once you’ve decided which color scheme will best complement and refresh your outdoor lounge, it’s time to start incorporating those shades throughout the space. Paint an outdoor wall or fence, add area rugs, potted flowers and toss pillows and hang up decorative objects. A landscape screen in a bold hue adds a sizable contrasting pop of color. Don’t forget about outdoor serving ware. This is an especially easy way to add new color, especially if you have an outdoor buffet where you can display some of the pieces.
Structure Your Space Around Shade
We’ve said it before, but we can’t reiterate enough how important it is to provide plenty of shade features in your outdoor lounge, particularly here in Southern California. While most of us love catching a few rays, there is nothing that will put a damper on your outdoor activities faster than being too hot or toasted from the sun with nowhere to find relief.
There are plenty of options for adding shade throughout your outdoor living space – everything from a fabric gazebo to a sail shade to a traditional patio umbrella. If you have a lot of space to cover, we suggest using several outdoor umbrellas which can be moved or tilted as needed, no matter the season or time of day.
Focus on a Focal Point
Lastly, one thing that can really refresh your outdoor lounge for the new year is adding a dramatic centerpiece, or focal point. Consider such furnishings as an oversized planter, a fountain or an outdoor gas fireplace.
While front and center in your backyard makes a very bold statement, you may need to locate your focal point around the edges of the space or against a wall. For instance, it is usually easier to install a fireplace or fountain with access to existing gas or water lines, so those considerations will determine where you place the piece de resistance of your backyard.
Now is the perfect time to think about ways to refresh your outdoor lounge for the new year so you can start enjoying it to the fullest.
